The Challenge

Our customer needed to increase their floor space as a result of significant growth and expansion in the business.  We have worked closely with them previously,  supplying and delivering 4 previous mezzanines in recent years.  Advantage was tasked with designing a mezzanine floor to take the current picking levels from ground floor and move them onto a raised level, freeing up the ground floor space for further pallet racking to allow them to hold more stock items.

Given the customer’s hectic business activity our greatest challenge was taking ownership of a large area of  their functioning floor space to allow for the mezzanine to be installed, while enabling them to maintain business continuity but for the build to take place unhindered. We also had to be mindful of the on-going health and safety of all staff and contractors within the vicinity.

Working closely with the customers internal teams we fenced off the area required for the build which we would be carrying out in two halves. Ordinarily we build the main steelwork for the whole mezzanine in one go and progress from there, in this instance we needed to allow the customer to continue using part of the adjacent space so they could continue operating at a reduced level for packing and dispatch. Areas were ring fenced with safety measures in place for protection of employees and contractors.

Due to the size of the mezzanine and its ‘deadweight’ and projected imposed load we also had to design the floor to reduce the axial loadings on the floor slab to avoid any floor damage.

The final mezzanine measured 61.2m long x 17.9m wide x 4.0m high with a UDL of 4.8kN / m2. Designed with three staircases to meet building regulations around safe travel distances, the central staircase was also made into a protected route incorporating a 30 minute fire rated stud and plasterboard enclosure leading to the external fire exit.  We also installed two pallet safety gates for ease of loading/unloading products on and off the mezzanine.

The customer was extremely happy with the end result, receiving a mezzanine floor solution that met their aims and allowed for them to deliver their continued growth plans.
